This holiday season brings on an entirely new meaning for our family. After seeing the destruction and devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to our friends and to those that live in the tri-state area, I’ve come to realize more and more how fortunate we are to just have a roof over our head.
Rather than spend money on lavish gifts for my girls, I want to help those who really need it all while teaching my girls along the way. Although Avery is still too young to understand, Harlan is starting to grasp that there are people out there that don’t have as much as she does. There are many toys that have arrived at our apartment that Harlan thinks are for her, but I’ve had to explain to her that I am giving away to children in need. Yes, we’ve had some tantrums along the way, because she really wants to play with them. But I am confident that just by showing her that we are helping others, that it will make an impact not only on the lives of those children receiving the gift, but on Harlan as well.
A couple of weeks ago, I told you about the long standing tradition that Hickory Farms plays in our family during the holiday season. Not only do we love their gift baskets, I also love Hickory Farms for what they do for others.
Hickory Farms is committed to making the holiday season a time of giving back. With their partnership with Share Our Strength (SOS), a leading national not-for-profit organization working to end childhood hunger in North America, they have helped donate over 1.9 million dollars to children in need.
When customers purchase a Party Planner gift box, Hickory Farms will contribute $5 to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. You can also include your own donation to the campaign along with your purchase.
Hickory Farms also has a partnership with Operation Gratitude – a national nonprofit that creates care packages for military men and women and their families. They currently have eight products that they offer free shipping to military APO and FPO addresses, including the “Home for the Holidays” gift basket.
