When I moved to New York City one of the many things I was looking forward to was Fashion Week. I dreamed of going to fashion shows and seeing the fabulous looks for the upcoming season first hand. It was a dream come true when Jill from Glamamom invited me the Richie Rich Villionaire fashion show.
After attending the TravelZoo cocktail party, Jill, Natasha of Physique 57, and I headed to the Hammerstein Ballroom for my first experience at a designer’s fashion show. We arrived to see a slew of people huddled together outside of the building in the freezing cold waiting to get in. We were still 30 minutes from the start of the show, so I figured it would only be about 10 minutes then they would let people in. After the 10 minutes of chatting with the people around us and wondering if we were even in the correct line, we had someone go up to the door to see what was going on. The doors were still shut and the people inside stared aimlessly at the crowd of raging attendees desperately wondering what the hell was going on. To see just how bad it was here is a quick snapshot of the twitter feed going on while we were waiting outside:
Finally after 30 minutes of freezing our butt off outside we squeezed our way through the doors to our seats. We had great seats and were only 5 rows from the runway. I put all of the hostility from having to wait outside and was excited to see the show. An hour and fifteen minutes later {that leaves the total waiting time to around 2 hours at this point} the lights went dark and a harpist and opera singer graced the stage. Just them, no one walking down the catwalk. As they ended their performance, a ballerina that looked as if she was elegantly being chased by a man in sequins danced around the floor as he caught up with her and they engaged in a quick makeout session.
Then the Harlem James Gang came out to the stage in what looked like a circus performance {one performer came in on a huge bicycle.}
Having no other experience with fashion week I thought this might be how all shows started out; completely random and awkward. Unfortunately these performances were just foreshadowing of the actual show. The outfits that came down the catwalk that night were nothing short of random. There was everything from elegant dresses to guys in blinged out briefs. No real theme for the show that lasted for about an hour.
Richie Rich even tried his hand at singing which was horrifying and painful to watch. I’d tell him to stick to his day job, but from judging the show, it doesn’t look like that is going too well either.
And some special guest appearances from Tinsley Mortimer and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir.
The grand finale of the show included yet another performance with the Harlem James Gang with Rich being escorted down the runway with none other than……JWOWW. Yep, the star of Jersey Shore herself. She strutted her stuff down the catwalk in a sparkly see-through get up.
After the show finally ended we dashed to get out of the place, but not before seeing some fashionable attendees on the way out.
In retrospect, I wish that this experience was a dream and didn’t happen in real life. The time spent with two lovely women was amazing, the fashion show was anything but.

HOLY MOLY, that was a very cold night to be outside. You guys are so patient! I was freezing waiting for a cab to Queens. It does sound like an experience in deed. Only in NYC right? 🙂

Like you said – it was a fun night with you ladies but the show was less than thrilling to watch. Just a complete cluster of random stuff going on. At least we had a few delicious drinks at the Travel Zoo event before though! I say we go back soon for their “signature cocktail.”

At least you gals had fun with each other. That was a super cold night to be waiting outside for so long. Sigh!

Ooh hun! I”m so sorry! My fashion week experience had a little of what you’re talking about, with a dash of fabulousness as well (I just posted on it. It was crazy).
At least you were with some aweseome people.
Best,
Li
