I have had a love of theatre since I can remember. I was very involved in it in high school and every vacation I made to come up to the city I made sure to see as many shows as possible. When we were recently invited to see Freckleface Strawberry The Musical at New World Stages I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. This would be Harlan’s first theatre performance and I couldn’t wait to see her reaction when she saw everything live on stage. I couldn’t help but be a bit nervous as well, she is only 18 months and loves to run around and hates to sit.

Based on the beloved New York Times Best Selling book by actress Julianne Moore, Freckleface Strawberry is just like every other girl – except she has bright red hair and freckles. After being teased countless times, Freckleface Strawberry will do anything to get rid of her freckles – from scrubbing them with soap, to caking on makeup, and even wearing a ski mask to school! With the help of her schoolmates, her family, and lots of singing and dancing, Freckleface learns that everyone is different, but that is what makes everyone special.

The entire cast was a treat to watch and entertaining for our entire family. Harlan sat for almost {she had one minor fidgety moment} the entire 70 minute performance with her eyes glue to the stage. She clapped and swayed side to side during the songs and applauded after each one was over. It amazed me at how well behaved she was during the show. I’m sure her love of music and dancing had something to do with how much she enjoyed it.

After the show we were able to get our picture with Sanjaya Malakar who plays Danny in the show. Most people know him from his days on American Idol, now he is making his off Broadway debut in Freckleface Strawberry. He did an amazing job and wasn’t quite what I expected after seeing him on Idol many years ago.

Freckleface Strawberry is a must see for children of any age. The theatre is comfortable and perfectly appropriate for kids. No one sighed or rolled their eyes when a little one would whine and have to be take out. It was filled with parents who understood and children of all ages who danced the entire way through.

This was a perfect experience for Harlan’s first off Broadway show.

Disclosure: A Mommy in the City was not compensated for this post. I did receive tickets for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Looks like we had identical experiences and opinions! Except the Sanjaya part. He must have had the day off when we went 😉
