Before having Harlan I never thought about how much diapers would consume my life. I have two little brothers that are 10 and 11 years younger than I am. I used to change their diapers when they were younger but I guess I was too young to remember just how many diapers they were using. When Harlan was born I felt like I was changing a diaper every two hours {I probably was.} Since she has gotten a little bit older our diaper consumption has slowly dwindled…until recently.

I’ve talked about our battle with the potty before. She wanted to use it, then suddenly she didn’t and it was a figment of our imagination. Recently the potty has come back into the forefront and has sparked Harlan’s interest yet again. Only now instead of actually going on the potty, she just tells me she has to go so that I will take off her diaper and she is free {she thinks she is anyway} to run around naked.

For the past week she has come into my bed to tell me she has to go to the bathroom. When I rush her into the bathroom strip off her pants and diaper she will sit on the toilet for 5 seconds and then laugh and run out of the bathroom. When I run after her in an attempt to put the diaper back on, she laughs hysterically running away from me. The other day I was cooking dinner in the kitchen and she comes in with her dress in one hand and her diaper in the other completely naked.

Her new “free spirited” nature has me begging {and sometimes bribing} her to wear a diaper and sometimes even put her clothes on. I am terrified that we are going to go out on a play date and she is going to strip naked in front everyone. Or even worse that she will do it in daycare while I am working out at the gym. This new little obsession of hers has me a nervous wreck!

There are many stages of toddlerhood that have caught me off guard, but this has trumped everything else!

Did your child go through this “free spirit” stage? Any suggestions on how to keep her from taking off her diaper?

{Yes, I know this story will embarrass her later on in life, but thats what makes this fun!}

Ha, cute!

I think it’s a phase all kids go through. I know mine did it. Even now my daughter likes to take off her clothes and walk around in her undies…

This pic of your daughter is adorable. I am contemplating whether I should break out the potty and make it our “summer project.” I don’t know…. maybe its too soon for me. My daughter is 15 months.

That’s what I was thinking too! If she is naked might as well make the most of it!

If there are times when you really, really need her to keep the diaper on, try turning it around so that she can’t reach those sticky tabs. Sometimes that works!

Our oldest, O, went through the same thing. And I have to say going diaper-less actually HELPED in the potty training! Yes, it’s true (at least for us in this case). She would go around naked from the belly down and she would of course go wee-wee. She saw the cause and effect and kinda got that if she didn’t go potty, she would get all wet (because she didn’t have a diaper on) and also the floor got all wet. I have to say that I did a lot of cleaning up for that time period, but at least my floors were clean. And, like all stages, they don’t last…thank god! So embrace it – it just may help the potty training! Good luck. -pam

I was thinking of doing the same thing! Might as well make the most of her running around naked and get something out of it!

HAHAHA!!!! That is so funny and cute, although it would make me a nervous wreck too. LOL. Laissez faire, for now anyway!

Yes! Hoping it is a quick phase though!

Ha! I’ve heard of this happening. Peanut didn’t go through this phase – but like Pam said, I’ve heard it helps with potty training! Maybe she’s just ahead of the game (and on the right path ;))

That’s what I’m thinking. Maybe I’ll try that when have a day of nothing! {whenever that will be}

LOL!!!! This is too funny! I love Harlan’s free spirit. I think many toddlers go thru this stage. Chase has moments where he likes to “Free Willy” it too. My only concern with him flashing throughout the house is that he may urinate somewhere that I don’t see, and it dries in that area, and we’re wondering why certain parts of the house/furniture/etc. smell rank.

He also used to strip off his pj pants and diaper in bed… and I’d only discover it in the middle of the night when I popped by the room to check on him. lol

Love these toddler stories. As exhausting as this period is, it’s also hysterical!!! Good luck with potty training… we’re in the midst of it too!

Ha! I havve 4 kids total and 2 boys that are ages 5 and 3, they are known in our neighborhood as the Naked ones. My 5 year old comes home from pre k and immediently strips down to his boxers. The three year old stays in his. I am lucky if they will keep at least those on, so let them run free I say. They will grow out of it I hope!

She does the same thing when she gets home too! I hope this is something she will just grow of!

Many kids go through this. Try potty training, being naked makes it easier. My son used to strip in bed and shmear poop everywhere. We tried ducktaping his diapers shut, putting on his pjs backwards… he finally stopped and then a month later I found escapeejays.

Oh I need to look those up! I have been thinking about just doing her potty training now and getting it over with while she is in this stage!
