I know I’ve been absent from writing many personal posts on here lately. I apologize for that. The truth is, our life isn’t all that exciting lately (except for Har’s recent trip to the ER.) We are four months into being parents of two little ones and we are finally finding a good rhythm, which is a good thing for us, but in return has made our lives a bit mundane.
I have my daily routine that rarely fluctuates. The girls and I take Harlan to camp early in the morning. I go to the coffee shop to get my writing done for the day and then we go home eat lunch, the girls take their afternoon nap and before we know it, it’s time for dinner and then bedtime. Multiply that by five and you have my weekly routine.
I’ve been really good about unplugging on the weekend. There have been many weekends when I don’t open my computer at all. And to be honest, I don’t miss it. I am glued to this computer so much during the week that taking a break to spend time with family for a few days is absolutely necessary.
The weekends have been such a treat for us. It’s a time that is just for family. A chance where we can escape from the “real world” for two days and just be our family of four with not a care in the world.
Harlan is at the age where she really loves getting to learn about new things. Her favorite question to ask is, “why?” She wants to know why anything and everything happens. Even when you try and explain it to her, she will still follow up with “why?”
I’ve been taking time out of the weekends to spend a couple hours with just her. We go on “dates” as she calls them. Spending time with her by ourselves since I’ve had Avery just feels different. I value it so much more now.
And then there is my “Little A.” Avery is becoming more alert and, like her sister, loves learning new things everyday.
She learned to roll over yesterday for the first time. I had her on her back and left the room to go to the kitchen, when I returned in the room she was on her belly smiling with joy and so proud of herself.
She also loves to look at herself. This girl could spend hours just staring at herself in the camera phone. I’m okay with it because it makes for these kind of pictures.
With two curious little girls, it makes for our trips exploring the city so much fun. We love to get out the stroller and just walk. Walk until our heart is content. A couple of weekends ago we walked from the east side to the west side through the park and found new places we have never seen before. It’s part of the reason I love living here. There are always new places to see and things to do.
And then there is the time when we just spend our days at home. Our favorite thing to do lately is our nightly dance parties. We turn down the lights, turn on our favorite station and dance. MacKay holds Avery and dances with her and I have the pleasure of dancing with the Dancing Queen herself, Har.
So there you have it. Our life in a nutshell. It may not be the most exciting life, or even worthy of a blog post every week, but it’s our life. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Love this post and feel my situation is very similar with weekends offline and lots of dance parties – its the little moments! So important.

Lauren – this is lovely! The dance party sounds like something I might institute all by myself 😉 And I think your dates with Har are just precious. I really hope we get to see y’all in October when we are in the city. xo

Sounds like the perfect little bit of Heaven here on earth. As an adult I always heard my mom say the days she valued most were the ones she spent her two girls and my dad just doing the “regular” family stuff. Enjoy! 🙂
