We’ve been out at the beach this week (pictures coming soon) and have managed to stay unplugged from most electronic devices all week. It’s been so great to unwind from our daily routines and just have a week to relax and enjoy our family.

When I was packing for our trip, I knew that I was going to have to pack some toys for Harlan to keep her occupied. We didn’t have much room in our car for her to pack her entire room of toys (although I know she would have liked that) so I decided to let her pick a few favorites to bring on our trip.

Harlan is a big book worm. She loves books. She could spend hours at a book store browsing and reading the children’s book aisle. When I asked her what she wanted to bring with us on vacation, books was her first answer. As excited as I was to hear her say that, I knew that books alone weren’t going to suffice for our entire trip.

A couple days before our trip we received the LEGO DUPLO Read & Build Grow Caterpillar Grow set. I was going to show it to Harlan as soon as we got it, but decided to save it for our vacation. It made a great travel companion and was just the right size to fit in our bag.

The Read & Build includes a book as well LEGO DUPLO pieces that let Harlan put together the LEGOS as we are reading the book. It was a perfect combination for her of books and toys.

Other than her princess figurines (which travel with her everywhere) the Read & Build was the only other toy that we brought for Harlan this week on vacation. I am thrilled that it has been keeping her entertained the entire week.

The first time we used it, I read the book allowed as Harlan followed along assembling the LEGO DUPLO pieces as instructed in the story. We read about the little caterpillar that ran into other little creatures and continued to grow. We built each creature and added pieces onto the caterpillar throughout the book.

Harlan loved that she could do it on her own and I loved that the assembly pictures were easy for her to understand.

After I read it to her once, she wanted to “read” it on her own. I caught her several times making her own story about the caterpillar and building it all by herself.

Read & Build is great for little ones ages 1 1/2 to 4. It comes in three different versions: Let’s Go Vroom, Grow Catepillar Grow and Busy Farm.

LEGO and BabyCenter were kind enough to give me one extra LEGO DUPLO REad & Build for one lucky AMITC reader! Just fill out the form below to enter!

Reply

Oh how much I loved to play with Duplo and Lego as a kid. It enabled me to create guests for the treehouse. To build a fort around the neighbor’s cat. To build a tower as tall as my best friend. It let us use our imaginations far greater than any teddy bear or wind up toy could do. We could create any animal, vehicle or building. I am 21 weeks pregnant with my first child (it’s a girl) and I cannot wait to play with her. Who’d have thought you could have so much fun with a pile of plastic bricks 🙂 Lovely post, by the way.

Reply

I have a strong feeling that my 3 and a half yr old daughter will love Lego Duplo Read and Build as she has taken a liking to toys for little boys lately especially those that require mechanical skills like fixing stuff, making repairs, playing with toy cars and trucks, etc. Despite those who tell me that I should encourage her to like toys for girls, I know I should support her in whatever toys she may like as this helps her establish her own preferences and her own personality. Besides, LEGO, for me, is a gender-neutral toy and I am actually after the mental development that will surely come out from playing with it. 🙂
