When we first moved to New York City I was set on continuing my teaching career. I interviewed at several schools in the city only to find out that the salary here didn’t increase much from Florida. Our cost of living increased substantially, so in order for me to pay for childcare for Harlan, I needed a well paying job. I refused to go back to work just to pay for someone to take care of Har.
After much thought and consideration, we decided it was best for me to stay home with Harlan. It was definitely an adjustment, but I loved being able to stay home and watch her grow into this little girl right before my eyes.
With more time at home I slowly started blogging about our life in the city. After a year of blogging and spending countless hours on social media, a local company approached me about doing some of their social media for them. I was so immersed in it already, I knew it would be a perfect fit.
As time went on I picked up more social media clients and more freelance writing opportunities. For once in my life I felt it was exactly where I needed to be. Working from home doing something that I love while also being able to take care of my girls.
I’ve been asked several times how I do it, but honestly, I don’t think I’d do it any other way. I love having a career from the comfort of my home. It’s perfect for my lifestyle and our family.

I think it is really great that you are able to stay at home and do what you love. However, you have greatly increased your number of sponsored posts over the past few months and I feel like you have lost a lot of your original authenticity. I miss your original posts, not promoting a date night service, whirlpool, maternity and baby item brands I could never afford (and I would assume many of your readers.) I really hesitate to write this because I know I just look like a jerk no matter how I choose my words, but I can’t be the only person who feels this way.

Hi Sarah,
You don’t sound like a jerk at all. When we found out we were pregnant with our third, it threw us for a loop. Suddenly our life wasn’t as straight forward as we though it would be. Unfortunately that meant that I would have to take on more work to help support our family. I get approached a lot for sponsored posts (several a day) and only say yes to ones that truly fit my lifestyle. I try to write those posts without sounding too commercial and fit them into how they work in my life. What kind of “original posts” are you referring to so that I can make sure to get more of that? I never want to come off as too commercial and try to space things out as much as I can.
In regards to the baby and maternity stuff, I write about that because I am genuinely interested in it. I have really enjoyed doing my maternity style posts and those are in no way sponsored. I figured that because this is my last pregnancy, I want to feel my best and look my best and share that with all of my readers. Many of the baby products, like my stroller, might be more expensive, but that is only because our life in the city requires us to use certain items a lot more than we would in the suburbs.

I am so surprised to see you responded. I can empathize with your necessity to take on sponsored posts. I have truly enjoyed your most recent posts regarding
“Where do we go from here” and your trip to Vermont. Those are the types of posts I look for. I definitely saw an uptick in the number of sponsored posts, while I do think your reviews are authentic, I guess it just seemed like a lot right in a row, when I love to read your ‘off the cuff’ posts about your daily life and challenges. Also, I may confuse you talking about products you enjoy with sponsored posts. All in all, I think you are a great writer and it impresses me that you responded to my message. I will always be a loyal reader!

I always do my best to respond (even if it does take me weeks 🙂 ) I am actually really thankful for your thoughts on this. I know I’ve been taking on more as the holidays are starting to come up, but know that I am also going to try to do my best to balance it with more personal stuff too. Hey, sorry I can’t make it to this event, but I was reading an earlier post that mentioned you are considering a move to the ‘burbs once #3 comes along. I just wanted to let you know that we moved from the UWS up to New Rochelle when our second was on the way a couple of years ago, and even though it was definitely an adjustment from the city, I have really grown to love it it up here. Thank you Robin. Yes, we think that the suburbs might be what’s best for us next year when the baby comes. I will definitely be doing an all-call to my tri-state moms on what cities they like best because we are open to anything. I’m excited to see what New Rochelle is like when I drive through tomorrow!!
