Where's Walrus?

As a former teacher, I am a huge advocate for teaching literacy to children, especially at a young age. I am blessed to have a child that LOVES to read {or pretend to read.} I think “love” might be an understatement. I will catch Harlan in her room numerous times throughout the day by her bookshelf with a book in her lap and she is talking to herself pretending like she is reading.
We read together throughout the day too. One of my most valued times with her is when she is sitting on my lap and we are reading together. One of our favorite new books is Where’s Walrus? by Stephen Savage.

Where’s Walrus? is a wordless picture book about an adventurous walrus who escapes the zoo to the outside world. With the zookeeper in hot pursuit, Walrus cleverly tries on all sorts of hats to disguise himself. Throughout the book Walrus is a happy-go-lucky runaway as he hides amongst firefighters, high-stepping dancers, and even artists in Central Park.

The book will let your imagination go wild. Each time Harlan and I read it we make up a different story as to why Walrus left the zoo that day. Harlan’s favorite thing is to point out Walrus in each disguise.

Savage,illustrator of New York Times best selling book Polar Bear Night, is known for his economical style of illustration that conveys complex ideas and emotion with simple lines and color, does not disappoint with this book. The colors and attention to detail on each page are very engaging and are fun to view at any age.

Where’s Walrus? will help imaginations soar and bring creativity to story time. It has been a great addition to Harlan’s ever growing collection of books.
