Look! She's Growing Up

So often people tell me how big or tall Harlan has gotten since they last saw her. It is so hard for me to tell because I am with her everyday and don’t see the subtle changes in her appearance. It didn’t become obvious to me how big she really is getting until just recently.

Last weekend Harlan was laying in bed with MacKay and I watching a DVD that showed all kinds of animals. As each new animal would come up on screen Harlan would look at both os us with awe in her eyes and say, “look!” while pointing at the TV. It was as if she was seeing these things for the first time. Some animals she knew and some she didn’t. Those she knew she would say, “Look a tiger! Woah!” She was fascinated throughout the entire thing.

As the week progressed she has only gotten more and more observant. She noticed the constant sounds of sirens outside her window, the airplanes in the air, the baby crying in the apartment above us. You can see the amazement on her face as she points to her observation and says the word, “look!”

MacKay and I were talking last night just how much we’ve noticed her “growing up” in the past week. He caught her counting to ten last night after seeing numbers I wrote for her on a piece of paper, she’s really starting to put sentences together and have conversations with us. When I brought up to him that she is constantly telling me to “look” at things wherever we go, he said that she is just mimicking what we have taught her.

It’s true, we have always been her observers telling her to “look” at all of the interesting things we see around us. Now that she is getting older, she just wants to share her discovery of the world around her with those that she loves.
