Shortly before having Harlan, MacKay and I visited some of our friends in Orlando. We happened to make a visit to Disney World while we were there. The family we were with had two little girls, one of which was obsessed all things princess. She knew every single one of the Disney Princesses names, which at the time had me blown away. She could spit out the names and the movies in which each princess was in. We knew we were having a little girl and this gave us a glimpse into what our world was going to be like within a few short years.
A couple months later we welcomed our first little girl. A little girl who I am sure was born with an innate love for all things princess. Harlan was nearly two years old when she entered the “princess stage” and this was well before she had even seen her first princess movie.
Her fondness for princesses soon had our entire apartment filled with every princess toy you could imagine. Although she had never even seen a movie, she knew every single one of them by name. And before we knew it, she had her favorite princess of all; Cinderella.
The blonde haired, blue eyed, Cinderella captured my heart as a little girl just as she has Harlan. With the movie recently released from the Walt Disney vault, I couldn’t wait for Harlan to get to watch her favorite princess on the screen for the first time.
But not only did she get to watch the movie for the first time, she got to do it with her very own Cinderella dolls.
The day before Hurricane Sandy hit, the My First Disney Princess Cinderella and Prince Charming set arrived at our door. It couldn’t have come at a better time because of the circumstances that had us inside for a couple of days. As soon as Harlan opened the box, her eyes lit with excitement. This was her very first Cinderella doll.
Before I knew it, we had Cinderella and Prince Charming out of the box and she had Avery playing the role of the Prince, while Harlan was Cinderella.
Cinderella and the Prince were married several times that day.
A couple weeks later an even bigger surprise showed up at our door for Harlan. Her very own Disney Princess Cinderella Light Up Costume, My Magical Wand Cinderella, and the Disney’s Diamond Edition of Cinderella on DVD.
As any real princess would do when she first received a beautiful gown, Harlan immediately asked to dress up so that she could twirl around to watch the real magic of this dress, just as Cinderella did when she saw her gown for the first time.
It was truly love at first sight as she danced a magical dance around our hallway acting as if though she really was Cinderella at the ball. She loved that the dress lit up and “sparkled” as she twirled around and around.
After experiencing what it felt to be Cinderella, she wanted to see the magic of the Tollytots’ My Magical Wand Cinderella.
Wave the wand over Cinderella’s heart on her dress and she begins to sing and her dress lights up. As soon as Harlan saw it light up for the first time, she immediately said that it “did the same thing as her gown did.” She loved that she has her own dress that lit up just as her Cinderella doll did. Cinderella sang along as Harlan brushed her hair and tried to get it perfect for the ball.
And just like the sweet big sister that she is, she didn’t want Avery to feel left out of the Cinderella party, so she went and got Wedding Cinderella for Avery to play with while she finished Cinderella’s hair.
Soon after Cinderella was ready, it was time to watch Cinderella on the big screen. It was so magical to see the excitement in Harlan’s eyes as she watched the movie hugging her My Magical Wand Cinderella tightly. She sang along to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo and cheered up and down as Cinderella found her Prince Charming.
Harlan might not have known that she’s always been my little princess, but I am thankful that Cinderella’s magic could help her see it.
