We’re pretty Star Wars obsessed in our house. The Star Wars bug has affected everyone and now it’s all I hear about all the time. With this being the case, it came as no surprise to me that Harlan wanted a Star Wars party for her birthday.

Now that she’s older, Harlan wants to be super involved in the party planning process. She knows how much I love putting everything together and she appreciates all of the work that goes into the party. She helped me every step of the way from the decor to the food. We shopped online, looked on Pinterest, and she even got involved on making some of the decor on her own.

My inspiration for the party was all of the gorgeous balloon garlands I’ve seen on social media lately. I decided to try my hand at doing one myself. While it’s rather simple, it’s incredibly time consuming. Between blowing up the balloons and attaching them, it took a little over two hours to put together (I’ll do a quick tutorial soon.) But even with the time put in, I love the way it turned out!

As with every party, we ordered our cake from Magnolia Bakery in the city. I bought some fondant and cut out the stars to decorate it and then added the figurines on the top. Harlan took great pride in picking out the two characters that adorned the top of the cake and knew that it had to be one from the dark side and one from the light side (is that correct Star Wars lingo?)

Pinterest had some pretty great Star Wars food ideas and these were all super easy to make!

When her friends arrived to the party everyone got a mask and a lightsaber and we officially kicked off the celebration with a dual. They had so much fun getting into character.

Probably my favorite piece was these marble inspired plates from Shop Sweet Lulu. I wish I could use them for every party I throw.

And by far the best moment was when MacKay dressed as Kylo Ren and surprised everyone at the party. He was a a highlight of the party and Harlan could not have been happier.

Happy Seventh Birthday Harlan!

You know I’ve mentioned my love of fall before and it’s finally here! Last Thursday we kicked off the first day of fall in the most appropriate way possible, at the Ocean Spray® cranberry bog of course.

The Ocean Spray® cranberry bog was back in Rockefeller Center® to kick off the first day of fall in celebration of America’s favorite fruit! This year marks the bicentennial of the first cultivated cranberry harvest and we were there to to learn about the cranberry’s amazing story of taste, health and heritage in the best way possible; knee deep in an actual cranberry bog.

We eat a lot of cranberries in our house. Most of the time it’s dried and in trail mix, but we do eat it a lot during the fall and winter in baked goods and casseroles. While we are used to buying them raw in a bag or dried and ready to eat, we’ve never really put much thought to all that’s involved in making the delicious fruit.

So we put on our overalls and jumped right in the bog with multi-generational Ocean Spray® cranberry growers and their families who spoke with us about how they harvest the cranberries and how the process has changed over the last 200 years. scooping-cranberriesimg_0091-2

Fun Fact: While we’re so used to seeing the cranberries float in water (we see it on the Ocean Spray commericals all the time,) it wasn’t until this event that I learned that’s not the case at all. Cranberries actually grow on a vine and the night before harvesting, the farmers fill the bog up with water and then use a machine to loosen the cranberries off of the vine and they float to the top. Then the farmers load them up on trucks and many become juices, dried fruit, and more!

The kids are always into doing hands on activities and not only did they learn the history of harvesting cranberries, but they had the chance to make their very own cranberry bog. They filled up a cup with clay, rocks, soil, and sand before sticking in their cranberry vine. We now have the plants right outside of our house waiting for them to go through winter before we transplant them from the cup. The kids and I are crossing our fingers for at least one cranberry next fall.

And because technology is so incredible the kids were able to take a virtual tour though a cranberry bog. Ocean Spray launched the “Most Beautiful Harvest” experience in 2015 using Oculus Rift technology. (You can watch it here) It was so funny to see the kids look up and down and all around so that they could make sure to capture all 360 degrees of the experience.

Macks and I get two days during the week with just the two of us. As he gets older (and much more talkative,) it’s become a time that I cherish during the day. I’ve started to carry on the tradition that I have with the girls and have been taking him on dates in the morning. We’ll go to breakfast, to the bookstore, or something simple like playing outside. I love this time together with him.

Just the other day as we were scooting outside on our back porch, he came up to me and gave me the biggest hug around my neck and told me he loved me. It was just the assurance that I needed that he loves this time together just as much as I do.

That’s what makes me happy.

Now tell me something good. Something that’s made you happy. It can be big, it can be small, just something that has put a smile on your face. You can participate by sharing a photo on Wednesday with the hashtag #WhyImHappyWednesday and tagging me @laurenjimeson or feel free to write it in the comments below. I do read them all and am happy to reply back on your good news! You can also join in the conversation on my Facebook page!
